Is is okay to go off of Enbrel after being on it for a year or so and try something new?Is is okay to go off of Enbrel after being on it for a year or so and try something new?

I do not want to have a shot weekly for the rest of my life. What would be a good alternate medication to try after a year of being on Enbrel?

Dr. Justus Fiechtner says:

There are multiple alternative medications to Enbrel, most of which would be less frequent injection than once a week, including Humira (every 2 weeks under the skin like Enbrel), Cimzia (2 injections monthly at the same time or 1 injection every 2 weeks), Simponi (injections once a month) and intravenous infusions such as Remicade (as infrequently as 1 month), Orencia (IV monthly) and Actemra (IV monthly). Obviously, this should be discussed with your rheumatologist, because of their specific preferences and with the insurance carrier, which frequently charges you a different amount for different meds, depending on your specific policy.

You should always consult with a professional before taking any new medication, but it is important to know what medicine works best for you.
