Are there new and safer medications for SLE Lupus and Fibromyalgia Syndrome?
I got a severe gastric ulcer from taking the medications for my diseases. My liver, kidneys, bladder and gall bladders have been damaged more from the prescription medications than the diseases.
Answers from our Doctors
Dr. Chad Boomershine says:
There are currently 3 indicated medications for treating fibromyalgia syndrome: 1) Lyrica, 2) Cymbalta, 3) Savella. Lyrica is an anti-convulsant, Cymbalta and Savella are antidepressants. None of these medications are associated with causing gastric ulcers, so they are safer from that standpoint. However, if you have liver or kidney disease you should talk to your doctor before using any of these medications.

Lyrica made my vision so blurry I thought I was having a stroke. I did some research, and discovered it's a common side effect.
Cymbalta and Savella both irritated my colitis (bad colitis along with the Fibro.) I can take neither.
I am presently on anti-depressant (new for fibro: Vibryyd, works very well in that I'm not AS suicidal as I have been.) I take Lunesta which works well for sleep.
The doctor who has been treating me for 15 years is up on fibro: we've tried everything (and more.) He's had me also on 2 Norco 10 mg every 4 hours, which worked for 13 years. Then the fibro took a bad turn: this doctor cannot prescribe stronger pain meds.
I saw one rheumatologist yesterday who refused any pain meds whatsoever - for reasons that made no sense to me.
I cannot go back to the Norco or I would, but when my doc told me he couldn't give anything stronger, I supplemented with Tylenol for 2 years and wound up in the hospital with Tylenol poisoning (last August.) Since I've been taking a tiny dose of pain meds (all he could find that did NOT have Tylenol in it.)
Sorry this is so long, but I truly am desperate - since last August I have been bed-bound, cannot walk for the pain. I just want my life back. For me, that's going to mean the correct medication. Again, I don't understand the doctor yesterday's reaction to giving it. She did send me to both a pain clinic and this Dr. Boomershine (I told her the truth: I've been in agony since that hospital, and I do not intend to stay this way. My psychiatrist insists I see new doctors, as I have told him that I no longer intend to live in such agony. I am allowing one more month: at the end of that month, I'll take one final step to made certain I have no more pain. Period.)
All that to ask this: Are those the only drugs he treats fibro patients with? Does he also have an aversion to the meds that help me live? If so, I'll save myself a 60 mile trip to his office.
Thank you so much for any information you may have.
I have severe fibro too and have been on Lyrica for 3 years. It helps greatly! Yes it does cause blurry vision (morning and evening mostly) but I just had my glasses changed. It is worth that to have the good pain reduction.
I've read all your post and It's really amazing , I can say. Keep it up and I will follow every single one of them :)
